Proofreading — Factual Mode

Roles that commonly require this performance level
Factual checking requires catching incorrect dates, wrong names, inaccurate numbers, and internal contradictions. This is the hardest proofreading skill because it requires domain knowledge alongside reading accuracy.
Cross-referencing skill: Factual errors are not visible like spelling mistakes. You need to notice that "founded in 1987" contradicts "celebrating 30 years in 2015" (should be 2017). This requires active comparison.
Domain knowledge: Factual checking in professional settings requires familiarity with the subject matter. Legal, medical, and financial documents each have their own standards and common error patterns.
If a document mentions a date, amount, or statistic — verify it against other mentions in the same document. Internal contradictions are the most common factual errors.
Is "Mr. Sharma" consistently spelled? Does "CEO" match the actual title mentioned elsewhere? Name inconsistencies are easy to miss but critical to catch.
If a table shows percentages that should add to 100%, check that they do. If revenue minus costs should equal profit, verify the math.
If you are not sure whether something is factually correct, flag it for verification rather than assuming it is fine. Better to over-flag than to miss an error.
What counts as a factual error?
8,000–Corporate writing is the common benchmark for BPO back-office roles. Insurance and banking roles may require 10,000+ KPH with 97%+ accuracy.
Is factual checking harder than grammar proofreading?
Yes — factual checking requires domain knowledge and cross-referencing ability. You need to notice contradictions, not just language errors.
What roles require factual accuracy checking?
Fact-checkers, legal reviewers, academic paper reviewers, and editorial proofreaders all commonly verify factual accuracy.
